Pine trees are a signature feature of Payson and the surrounding Rim Country. However, pruning them requires precise timing. Trimming pines during active growing seasons opens up fresh sap wounds that attract devastating bark beetles.
The Winter Pruning Window
The absolute safest time to prune pine trees in northern Arizona is during the coldest winter months, specifically from November through February. During this time, trees are dormant, sap flow is minimized, and bark beetles are inactive.
Why Growing Season Pruning is Dangerous
Pruning pines in spring or summer releases volatile chemicals called terpenes in the fresh sap. Pine bark beetles can sense these scents from miles away and will target the weakened tree, nesting in its bark and cutting off nutrients. This can kill a mature pine in weeks.
Exceptions: Emergency Pruning
If a limb is broken by a summer storm or poses an immediate threat to your roof, it must be removed. In these urgent cases, a professional arborist will prune clean and apply a specialized wound sealant to mask the sap smell and deter beetles.
