Wildfire is a natural part of the Arizona mountain ecosystem. As homeowners in Payson, Pine, and Strawberry, we must design our properties to coexist safely with forest fire risks. Creating a defensible space is the single most effective action you can take.

Managing Ladder Fuels

Ladder fuels are low-lying branches, shrubs, and tall grass that allow a fire to climb from the forest floor into the tree canopy (crown fire). Pruning lower branches of large trees up to 6-10 feet from the ground breaks this ladder, keeping fires low where firefighters can manage them.

Tree Crown Spacing

Ensure that the outer edges of tree crowns are spaced out, especially within 30 to 100 feet of your house. Ideally, maintain at least 10 feet of space between tree canopies. On steeper slopes, even more space is required as fires travel faster uphill.

Mitigate Pine Needle Accumulations

Pines constantly drop needles, which form dry fuel beds on lawns and roofs. Regular cleanup, pine needle removal from gutters, and thinning clustered pine saplings are critical annual tasks for maintaining your fire defensible zone.
